Campo Aberto — Artist Residencies Programme

Campo Aberto — Artist Residencies Programme is one of the pillars for the artistic development of several companies and artists. In Teatro Municipal Campo Alegre, eight companies and projects develop Long-term residencies, comprising production facilities, rehearsal studios and stage presentations. Five areas will be represented, turning Campo Alegre into a real creative lab with Casa da Animação, Companhia Instável, Drumming Grupo de Percussão, Erva Daninha, Estrutura, Medeia Filmes, Nome Próprio and Teatro Experimental do Porto. The Short-term residencies take place in the two hubs of Teatro Municipal, bringing to Porto artists from different latitudes, which later on will present the work resulting from these residencies. The main thrust of the Crossed residencies programme is to encourage artistic creation through a network of international partners that ensure the conditions for artistic residencies. Current members are Teatro Municipal do Porto, NAVE — Creation and Residency Centre, CCNCN — Caen’s National Choreographic Centre in Normandy, and Charleroi danse / Choreographic Centre of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Teatros del Canal, in Madrid (Spain) and CN D — Centre Nationale de la Danse, in Paris (France) and Associação Artística and Cultural Mindelact (Cabo Verde).

Long-term residencies


Casa da Animação

Casa da Animação came to life in 2001, with the support of the European Capital of Culture 2001 and the Municipality of Porto. 

Companhia Instável

Companhia Instável was created in Porto as a response to the need to provide options to improve the skills of contemporary dancers. 

Drumming Grupo de Percussão

Devoted to the contemporary music, Drumming Grupo de Percussão is internationally established as one of the most important groups of its kind. 

Erva Daninha

The mission is the creation of contemporary circus, exploring the combination of different expressions in the performing arts. 


Cátia Pinheiro and José Nunes founded Estrutura in 2009. It has createdand produced theatre performances. 

Medeia Filmes

Medeia Filmes has been showing films in Portugal for more than 20 years, and at Teatro Campo Alegre for 10.

Nome Próprio

Nome Próprio is a structure dedicated to the production and promotion of artistic projects, mainly contemporary dance and theatre. 

Teatro Experimental do Porto (TEP)

Teatro Experimental do Porto is the oldest Portuguese theatre company.

Short-term residencies

The short-term residencies will take place in the 2 hubs of Teatro Municipal, bringing to Porto artists from different latitudes, which later on will present the work resulting from these residencies.

JAA! Young Associated Artists

In the next two seasons, 2019/2020 and 2020/2021, Teatro Municipal do Porto also rethinks the way it follows certain artists in the medium term, and how those same artists occupy the programme physically and most of all reflexively. We will reconsider the concept of “associated artist”, who up to now had our support in new co-productions, premieres and promotion, and start following three very young artists (all under the age of 25), whose first works’ relevance we recognise, and with whom we shall work out an individually tailored programme of artistic mentorship. Rather than immediately moving forward to challenges involving new creations, we are much more interested in understanding what artists need to enhance their work in this initial, key moment in his career. Hence, at this stage of artistic blossoming, we shall accompany dancer and choreographer Ana Isabel Castro, and the creative duo Guilherme de Sousa & Pedro Azevedo, who wander between physical theatre, installation and set design. Teatro Municipal do Porto will thus occupy the life and growth of these young artists full of inebriating juvenile energy over the next two seasons.

Associated Artists

Choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira and theatre director Jorge Andrade (mala voadora) are Teatro Municipal do Porto's first associated artists. The invitation addressed to them and the existence of this new figure strengthen the Theatre’s mission to, on the one hand, support and help grow new works in the fields of dance and theatre, and on the other hand encourage the ongoing and active involvement of two creators in key programming moments. Engaging in a dialogue with the Theatre, and over the course of two seasons — 2017/18 and 2018/19 —, we come closer to the ideas and the work the two artists will carry out.

31 years old, dancer and choreographer

What does it mean for you to be associated art- ist at Teatro Municipal do Porto (TMP) over the next two seasons?

To be associated artist cements the work Tiago [Guedes] and TMP have been carrying out in favour of my career as an emerging artist. It also provides me with the opportunity to mature a few ideas and to assert myself as a creator. I have only a small number of creations to account for, and it will be a way for me to grow with the Theatre during the next two years, and for this institution to help me catapult myself into a more consistent universe.

What will this partnership amount to during the two seasons?

In the scope of Paralelo – Approach Programme to Performing Arts, I will work on an on-going project with teenagers – some deaf, some others musicians – to make a dance piece together with composer Filipe Lopes. It is about the way focus varies between image and sound. There’ll also be the rerun of “Brother” and a new creation that premieres in May 2019. Furthermore, I’ll carry out a series of workshops in May 2018 during DDD — Festival Dias da Dança. Finally, I’d like to point out a collaboration between myself and Jorge Andrade (another associate art- ist over the next two seasons from mala voadora), which premieres in 2019. 

40 years old, theatre director

Teatro Municipal do Porto (TMP) extended you an invitation to take part in the programme of these two seasons. What does that mean for you (and to mala voadora, the company you cofounded)?

It pleases me. For a long time, mala voadora’s productions stayed away from Porto. Every now and then, we presented our work at Serralves. With the opening of TMP, we started presenting our works on a more regular basis. They were even coproduced by TMP, and they premiered in its theatres.

In how many performances and activities will this invitation result in the near future?

mala voadora already set out a programme for the next two years and some of our productions, namely the one we will premiere next, which is a coproduction with TMP, will be presented here at Rivoli. It is called “Amazónia”, and it will be presented in January. Throughout the two years, we will also present other performances – some are coproduction premieres and some are reruns, like one of our plays with choreographer Miguel Pereira, “Wilde”. There’s also a work titled “Manual do Trabalho e Felicidade”, to be developed in partnership with Paralelo — Approach Programme to Performing Arts, and we will premiere a new work called “Dinheiro”, which will discuss the way mala voadora relates to money.
