"It was just a dream." Normality returns quickly and sanity is not at risk, just turn the other way and snuggle back into your own soft and fragrant conceptions. How many layers does a dream have? Where does one person's dream end and another's dream begin? Where is the border between the real and the surreal? Why ask yourself these questions? The alarm in the morning faithfully reminds me to forget. But I don't forget, not always. And the only way out is to repeat: “it was only a dream”. It's never just a dream. — Leo Calvino and Joana Couto

Leonardo Calvino (pseudonym of Iuri Martins) is mostly self-taught and had a multidisciplinary path, passing through martial arts, music, comic book script, circus, magic and is currently dedicated to dance as a research territory. He studied for 10 years at a Kobudo school (a set of traditional Japanese martial arts); he participated as an instrumentalist (transverse flute, saxophone and percussion) in Brazilian popular music groups, such as Teko Porã; founded Nibelungo Studio where he worked as an editor and producer of books and comics for 5 years; since 2014 he practices object manipulation as a form of contemporary juggling, performing at festivals, cultural events and street shows in several cities in Europe and South America. In 2018 he started developing his first short-lived solo “Meeting the Unknown”. In 2019 he created, in collaboration with Juan Fresina, Maria Clara Smith and Cesar Diaz, the show “Cegos do Castelo” for a unique performance. In 2020, he attended the FAICC, formation of Companhia Instável, working, after the course, as technical director and light designer in the show “If only this was about food” and as a playwright in the show “Sinto Muito”, both by Joana Couto. He was also a performer for Kale Companhia de Dança in the show “Peixe Dança”, by Aldara Bizarro. His first long-running solo titled “Inercia”, premiered at Festival Súbito in September 2021.

Joana Couto began her dance career at an early age, performing 15 years of specific teaching at the Ginasiano Escola de Dança. In 2017 she graduated, acquiring the Diploma of Specialized Teaching in Dance. She had the opportunity to take intensive courses at the Carte Blanche Company and at Malandain Ballet Biarritz. She continued her studies for another year at ArtEZ University of Arts in the Netherlands. As a performer, she has worked since 2016 with the Kale Companhia de Dança, having performed with pieces by Helder Seabra, Christine Hassid, Gilles Baron, Eldad Ben-Sasson, Elisabeth Lambeck, Paula Moreno, Osa+Mujica, Aldara Bizarro, La Tierce, between others. In 2019, she starts working with Companhia Instável, on the works “Timber” by Roberto Olivan and “Lowlands” by Helder Seabra, which are in national circulation. As a freelancer she also worked with Rita Soeiro and Associação Limina. She started teaching in 2020, being invited to give classes/workshops in Portugal, Bulgaria, Israel and Spain. She made her premiere as a choreographer with the creation “I hope this was about food” (2018-2021) which she presented in Netherlands and at Teatro Campo Alegre. In 2021, she also premiere her latest creation “I'm sorry”. She co-creates with Beatriz Sarmento the multidisciplinary initiative Festival Súbito, which had its zero edition in September 2021. As a satellite activity to the festival, she launches the Órbita residency programme, which already has 3 editions planned.

Since the Palcos Instáveis series started in 2012, it has encouraged the work of upcoming creators from Porto and the Northern region of the country. Curated by Instável — Choreographic Centre and co-produced by Teatro Municipal do Porto, Palcos Instáveis facilitates artistic residencies to create, produce, announce and present new works, thus enabling the intersection of artistic experiences and providing the city with the opportunity to get in touch with upcoming choreographic languages.
