The 2022 edition of FITEI revolves around grief, dysphoria and pleasure, imagining the necessary and possible futures. Through gender perspectives, healing and repair processes, and pure hedonism, while mental health and sustainability remain pressing political issues, the 45th edition of FITEI presents a series of theatre and dance pieces, performances and music performances, artistic residencies, master classes, workshops, book launches and exhibitions with the promise of bringing to Porto the great contemporary scene from Portugal and Iberian America.
This year’s performances, including the ones presented at Teatro Municipal do Porto, either side with the fear of getting our lives back or with the eager desire to do so: internationally acclaimed Fuck Me, by Argentinian Marina Otero, is a performance that puts on display the reconstruction of a performer’s body after a trauma; Orlando, by Cláudia Lucas Chéu and staged by Albano Jerónimo for Teatro Nacional 21, is a piece that looks upon gender issues; NU#03, by Teatro do Frio, comes after a residency at FITEI in 2021; Blasted, by Sarah Kane, is staged by João Telmo for Nova Companhia; and FÁBULAMÃE [MOTHERTALE], with text by Pedro Galiza, is staged and performed by Teresa Arcanjo and the Indigo Quintet. A varied programme being presented at TMP, including three premieres and four co-productions (two from TMP and two from FITEI), a seminal international performance, and two companies from Porto, an upcoming one and an established one.
In 2022, we will offer four workshops, which will also take place at TMP and aim at training both professionals and amateurs. Additionally, given the broad scope of their addressees, they enable us to carry out audience development and the audience to come closer to and better understand the processes of artistic creation, placing them in a position to question the practices and subjects, and the way to approach them.
The 45th edition of FITEI will take place in a year when theatres will be able to once again fill with people, and thus art and culture will regain in the city of Porto their paramount importance for all of us, making their contribution to the possible and imagined futures.
