FITEI 2021

Festival Internacional de Expressão Ibérica at TMP

FITEI 2021 takes place between April 28 and May 16. The 44th edition of the longest-running festival in the country presents performances chosen because of the topic of sustainability.Since its inception, FITEI is a place where artists of Iberian expression from all over the world gather and meet, something that has been reconsidered so as to question what this Iberian expression unity means, taking into account centuries of colonialism, diasporas and cover-ups, on the one hand, but also affinities and dialogue, on the other hand. As it extends to Porto, Gaia, Matosinhos and Viana do Castelo, the festival also resizes with a strategic and communication partnership with DDD - Festival Dias da Dança, seeking to turn the northern region of Portugal into one of the most sparkling ones at the international level. From DDD+FITEI comes the + WEEK, enabling Portuguese artists to present their work to dozens of programmers from all over the world. While it has been strengthened by this partnership, FITEI remains true to its identity and distinguishing features: the current international productions it follows and brings on stage, and the insistence on a guiding theme whose relevance and topicality are beyond dispute. It also meets new scenic discourses emerging in countries of Iberian expression, thus encouraging dialogue, the crossing of generations, transmediality and the artistic forms of resistance. This year's programme frames the notion of environmental and political sustainability, seeking to meet artistic discourses of resistance that put forward alternatives to the prescriptive one. We pay particular attention to works in line with what philosopher Márcia Tiburi would call political sexology. Following in the footsteps of Foucault, who pointed out sex as a power mechanism, in 2021 we shall bring to the festival artists rising up against misinformation, which finds allies in puritanism and homophobia, and uses them as tools. We'l look into productions pointing at plu-ral, upstream ways of living, thus confronting the conservatism on the rise. We'll analyse the body as a place of non-verbal discourse that proposes alternative meanings. Still recalling Foucault, his History of Madness and the way it relates to normativity, we'll reflect upon mental health and how we currently seem to be heading toward psychological unsustainability, with our hyper-pro-ductive brains unable to make sense of the world.
