The Porto City Hall has put into operation a new Self-Consumption Production Unit (UPAC) at the Teatro Rivoli, part of the Teatro Municipal do Porto (an establishment managed by Ágora – Cultura e Desporto do Porto, E.M.), reinforcing its energy transition strategy in the public building. The installation, composed of 139 photovoltaic solar panels with an installed capacity of 86.2 kWp, began operating in September and is expected to reduce the building's electricity consumption by approximately 30%.

The unit's estimated annual production is 121.81 MWh, contributing to increased self-sufficiency and a reduction in the energy bill associated with one of the city's most emblematic cultural spaces.

According to data from Águas e Energia do Porto, in August of this year the city already surpassed the total renewable energy production recorded in 2024, exceeding 2 GWh. This result reinforces the city hall's commitment to decentralized and sustainable production, aiming to reduce dependence on the electricity grid, operational costs, and emissions associated with municipal activity.

Local energy production is a central pillar of the municipality's carbon neutrality strategy, which is why the municipal company intends to continue installing UPACs in other public buildings.

The investment in the Teatro Rivoli is part of a broader strategy for modernizing and decarbonizing the municipal building stock, aligned with Porto's Municipal Climate Action Plan 2030. In addition to the environmental benefit, the installation of these units has proven financially effective, helping to mitigate the municipality's exposure to energy price volatility.

Porto's urban sustainability strategy has advanced in several areas—from electric mobility to energy rehabilitation—and the cultural sector now plays an active role in this agenda. With this new photovoltaic installation, the Teatro Municipal do Porto joins the energy transition, becoming an example of innovation and sustainability.

The city hall plans to replicate this approach in other strategic facilities, reinforcing its commitment to a more efficient, resilient, and environmentally responsible city.
