On the September 16, 17 and 18, Teatro Municipal do Porto (TMP) will again open its doors for a return in charge of the renowned Belgian choreographer Jan Martens and also a new programming focus – Portraits – which opens with Filipe Pereira and Susana Chiocca.
The great success of the Festival d'Avignon is the lever for the new season of Teatro Municipal do Porto. After passing in 2015, Jan Martens returns to Rivoli to present, in a national premiere, any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones. Martens retrieved XI Jinping's statement from the 2019 protests in Hong Kong and drew a possible response. There are 16 performers on stage, from 16 to 69 years old, who expose and expand the particularities of their bodies and put them in rebellion. Each body, its form of resistance. This tribute to disobedience is accompanied by protest songs from the most different eras and genres, from Henryk Górecki to Kae Tempest, passing by Max Roach & Abbey Lincoln.
The piece will be presented at Teatro Rivoli's Grand Auditorium on September 18, at 7:30 pm. In addition to the live presentation, the piece will be presented in TMP Online format, on September 22, at 5 pm, and will be available for 24 hours.
Also on September 18, at 5:30 pm, at CAMPUS Paulo Cunha e Silva, there will be Paralelo Warm-Up with Teresa Chaves and André Araújo, as part of the Jan Martens performance. These pre-performance workshops are recurrent in TMP programme and offer different ways to experience the work to be seen, whether through movement, vocabulary or dramaturgy. Participation costs €2.50 or is free upon presentation of a ticket for the performance. Registrations must be made in advance to paralelo.tmp@agoraporto.pt.
With the opening weekend of this season, one of the new projects of the programme also appears: Retratos [Portraits]. This programming focus will bring to TMP moments shared between two artists who present themselves in the form of self-portraits and opens the way to reflect on the place of autobiographical work and self-portrait in the performing arts and in their relationship with other artistic areas.
The first moment of Retratos takes place on September 16 and 17, at Teatro Campo Alegre, with Filipe Pereira and Susana Chiocca, with the conference-performance Arranjo Floral, at 7:30 pm, and the performance BITCHO – à escâncaras, at 9:00 pm, respectively.
On September 17, the reflection on these self-portraits extends to a post-performance talk with the artists, moderated by Rita Castro Neves, at 10 pm, at the Café-Teatro of Teatro Campo Alegre. Also on September 18, the performance BITCHO – à escancaras will be presented on TMP Online, starting at 5 pm (available 24 hours a day).
Tickets for these and all other shows of the new season can be purchased at the physical ticket offices (Rivoli and Campo Alegre) or at the Bilheteira Online (BOL).
The transmissions of TMP Online performance take place on the digital stage of the Bilheteira Online (BOL), at tmp.bol.pt.
