Sinopse
A pioneer of computer music in Portugal, he was the country’s first composer to use, amongst other media, computers, electro-acoustics and orchestra simultaneously. He studied piano and composition at the Lisbon and Porto conservatories of music, and philosophy and humanities at the Faculty of Philosophy in Braga. He gained a PhD from the University of Paris I - Sorbonne, studied composition with Xenakis, Stockhausen, Ligeti, Pousseur and Boulez and learnt orchestra direction with Gilbert Amy and Michel Tabachnik. He studied electro-acoustics and musical computer studies at the universities of Vincennes and Panthéon-Sorbonne, working as an intern at IRCAM and CEMAMu. He is a professor of composition at the Porto School of Music (ESMP) and director of the Grupo Música Nova, which he founded in 1975. He has worked for the press and on television and radio, and with the Ministry of Education on reforming music teaching. He was responsible for bringing several major musicians to Portugal, such as Xenakis for the “Meeting with Xenakis” event in Porto, at Cinema Trindade, in 1973. He presented UPIC/CEMAMu with Xenakis in Lisbon. Cândido Lima returns to the Rivoli to perform one of his most celebrated compositions (Oceanos) three decades after its premiere at this very same venue.
