Fantasporto 2020

Porto welcomes one of the most prestigious film festivals in Europe and the world, the Oporto International Film Festival, affectionately known as Fantasporto. It celebrates its 40th birthday in 2020, and takes place at Teatro Rivoli between February 25 and March 8 with the support of the Porto City Council. Thirteen partying days for the film world with producers, directors, actors and actresses, distributors and the audience blending in a many-sided programme with films of all origins and genres—it is no surprise that a science-fiction or horror film is screened next to an intimate drama, a documentary, an authorial film or even an experimental film. This is a year to party, to celebrate and to remember the major film names Fantasporto catapulted to stardom and the other greats who presented their films at the festival, such as Max von Sydow, Guillermo del Toro, Wim Wenders, John Hurt, Rosanna Arquette, Danny Boyle, Ben Kingsley and Paul Schrader, among others. This is a year of tributes, and also a year of transition for a new team that still includes its founders. The competition remains the same, while we screen plenty of classics. The programme is always very up to date, and it includes world, international and European pre-releases, bringing to Porto dozens of foreign journalists and distributors to watch films yet to be commercially released “first hand”. The Industry Screenings, a way to hook up with the film industry, take place in parallel.
