João Telmo / Nova Companhia

Fazer e Desfazer [Doing and Undoing] stems from the idea of exploring and discussing gender issues in post-modern contemporary Western societies, but in a way that targets a young audience whose physical and intellectual education is still ongoing. As such, the project aims at providing a place to question both identity and body, based on the notion of gender performativity as developed by philosopher Judith Butler. This play intends to show that sex presentation is not immutable. Gender may be much more than assigning meanings about biological differences and thus become a means to a speech and identity reading. For femininity does not belong just to women. And masculinity does not belong just to men. – João Telmo


Nova Companhia was created in May of 2013 with the purpose of developing, producing, promoting and supporting the artistic projects of theatre directors João Telmo and Martim Pedroso, as well as those of other artists and creators wishing to join in and whose work is based on performing arts, performance, dance, music and visual arts.
From the beginning, Nova Companhia has met the goals it set for itself, such as creating theatre presentations signed by Martim Pedroso and João Telmo, its artistic co-directors, and a prolific body of work of other artistic projects, comprising photography, performance and video.
Collaborating with other companies and leading artists, and crossing disciplines have been Nova Companhia’s main premises to call barriers and formulas into question, and thus to enable the company to grow within its main field of action: theatre. Meeting has been the key motto to build a slogan or a brand that stands out for its diversity, and it is based on it that the company puts together a way of doing, an attitude or even—why not?—a philosophy that masterminds unique objects that accommodate knowledge, practice and reflexion.
