Sinopse
Starting from field research in wetlands and rivers throughout Portugal, Margarida Mendes' intervention proposes a space to think about the relationships between communities, materials and distribution flows that are established through them. Her empirical observations are crossed with investigations by scientists and experiences reported by local inhabitants and river guardians, in a confluence of perspectives between science, activism, and environmental justice. In her conference, we will transport ourselves to the coastal landscapes of the Ria Formosa and river estuaries of the Tejo and Sado rivers, to think about the broad context of metabolic and logistical relationships that expand through these. Highlighting the important role of wetlands as spaces for filtering and renewing ecosystems, her conference presents central debates that develop around the conservation of these spaces, thinking about the relationship between modes of existence over time.

Margarida Mendes is a researcher, curator and educator. Her practice explores ecological mediation, focusing on the intersection between visual arts, experimental cinema, ecopedagogy, sound practices and environmental humanities. She creates transdisciplinary forums, exhibitions, and experimental works in which modes of alternative education and listening practices can catalyze political imagination and restorative action. She has a long-standing involvement with anti-extractivist activism and eco-pedagogy, collaborating with environmental organizations, universities and institutions in the art world. She was part of the curatorial team of the 11th Gwangju Biennale, 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, 11th Liverpool Biennale, and 3rd Porto Design Biennale. She has directed several educational platforms, such as escuelita, an informal school at Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo-CA2M, Madrid (2017); The Barber Shop artistic project space in Lisbon dedicated to transdisciplinary research (2009-16); and the ecology curatorial research platform The World In Which We Occur/Matter in Flux (2014-18). Margarida has a PhD from the Center for Research Architecture, Goldsmiths University of London and is a member of Natural Contract Lab, a transdisciplinary collective that works on restorative justice and rights of nature in several European rivers.
