Sinopse
Digital experiences are mainly visual, in contrast to the rich multi-sensory and bodily experience of the “real world”. In response to this situation, there is a growing interest in design approaches that combine multiple sensory modalities, particularly in the areas of human-computer interaction and digital arts. Yulia Sion and Nuno N. Correia will present their work in multi-sensory design, focusing respectively on the tactile and auditory senses. Yulia Sion will present her interdisciplinary projects in Art & Science, emphasizing tangible manifestations of memories and changes in self-perception through bodily experiences and haptic technology. Nuno N. Correia will present his work in digital performance and ‘cross-modal’ design, particularly for contemporary music and dance, taking as a starting point the three EU-funded projects he has led. Together they will discuss their joint project “Resonant Memories” (with Clopy Diaz Reyes), carried out as part of an artistic and scientific residency within the scope of the EU Digital Deal initiative and in collaboration with Ars Electronica. This project addresses the challenge of digital exclusion among older people, involving them in the co-creation of tangible, multi-sensory representations of their episodic memories.

Yulia Sion is a researcher in the area of ??mediated touch and tactile design, with a special focus on tangible representations of memories. Yulia Sion has participated in several artistic and scientific residencies, including Starts.ee and European Digital Deal. Her work has been published at academic conferences including TEI, INTERACT, and HCI International. Furthermore, she is enthusiastic about disseminating knowledge about emerging technologies and sciences. She hosts a podcast with the Internet of Senses Institute in which she interviews influential researchers and industry experts about haptic technology and the sense of touch.
Nuno N. Correia, based in Tallinn, is a researcher, musician and artist. He is interested in technology-mediated performances and multi-sensory experiences, particularly involving sound. He is currently Associate Professor at Tallinn University (EE), guest professor at Aalto University (FI) and associate researcher at ITI-Interactive Technologies Institute (PT). Since 2000 he has taught and carried out research in digital media, mainly in: Aalto; Goldsmiths (United Kingdom); University of Greenwich (United Kingdom); ISTEC (PT); and ITI. Nuno has a PhD in New Media from Aalto University, with a thesis on Interactive Audiovisual Objects (2013). He received an EU Maria Sk?odowska-Curie grant for the Enabling Audiovisual User Interfaces project. He also led EU-funded projects: Moving Digits (on dance, technology and visualization) and MODINA (on dance, artificial intelligence and audience interaction; ongoing). He is currently participating in the Music Responsible AI research project (led by the University of the Arts London), and in an artistic and scientific residency as part of the EU Digital Deal initiative (led by Ars Electronica).
