Cycle Rainer Werner Fassbinder – The Urgency of Living

This will be the great cinephile event of the rentrée: a cycle of films by one of the biggest names in the history of cinema, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, whose work was a kind of “earthquake” whose effects are still felt today. It is therefore necessary to return to it, now in new restored copies, which will be made available to the Portuguese public, especially to new generations of spectators, who will enjoy them as an extraordinary discovery. Intense, tireless, Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-1982) was a kind of comet among the filmmakers of the “New German Cinema” – Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog, Völker Schlonforf, Margarethe Von Trotta and Alexander Kluge –, who from the late 1960s, a decade of contestation and radical changes in society, came to renew cinema in Germany, divided since the end of the Second World War, precisely the year Fassbinder was born. Fassbinder's production was immense and in 13 years he made 37 films, television series and videos, produced 4 radio plays, wrote 18 plays and staged 23. He was a complete author: director, actor (in his films and others), cinematographer, editor, producer and composer. His creativity knew no boundaries. In this year, which marks the 40th anniversary of the director's death, from the 6th to the 26th of October, at Teatro Campo Alegre, we will see 8 films in restored copies, one of them commercially unpublished in Portugal (Mamã Küsters Vai para o Sky).
