Sinopse

At this moment, there are parts of the planet that are ‘heating up’ – due to global warming, the expansion of desert areas, the struggle for water, the proliferation of radicalism, and the fight for survival. Paradoxically, floods and a lack of control over water resources are also causing the deaths and displacement of entire populations. #Não somos cactos# addresses the growing scarcity of drinking water on the planet and the new migration flows – human and more than human – associated with it, circumstances that promise to shake the very foundations of the reality we have known until now. It presents a virtually wordless fiction in which water takes a leading and provocative role: it can be what quenches our thirst, but also the cause of our drowning. It is inspired by the play of the same name, created by Rui Mendonça for Comédias do Minho and staged in 2016.

Author's bio text

The Teatro de Marionetas do Porto was founded in September 1988. The company’s theatrical practice reveals an unconventional approach to puppetry — a concept which, incidentally, is constantly being updated — and an understanding of puppet theatre as a poetic and evocative visual language that reflects contemporary life. The company seeks new ways of designing puppets — verging on kinetic objects — as well as new possibilities for exploring the grammar of this theatrical language, in terms of performance and its cross-disciplinary relationship with other forms of expression. In the year it celebrated its 25th anniversary (2013), the Teatro de Marionetas do Porto realised the great dream of its founder, João Paulo Seara Cardoso (1956–2010): the opening of the Museu das Marionetas do Porto. In addition to its performances, it organises workshops, staged readings and exhibitions, thereby fostering a strong connection with the community and the public.

Joana Magalhães is a transdisciplinary artist based in Porto. Her work lies at the intersection of theatre, installation and performance. Seeing, not seeing and how to see are the main focuses of her work. Her research centres on the co-evolutionary relationship between nature and culture.
