Teatro de Marionetas do Porto & Joana Magalhães

The Teatro de Marionetas do Porto was founded in September 1988. The company’s theatrical practice reveals an unconventional approach to puppetry — a concept which, incidentally, is constantly being updated — and an understanding of puppet theatre as a poetic and evocative visual language that reflects contemporary life. The company seeks new ways of designing puppets — verging on kinetic objects — as well as new possibilities for exploring the grammar of this theatrical language, in terms of performance and its cross-disciplinary relationship with other forms of expression. In the year it celebrated its 25th anniversary (2013), the Teatro de Marionetas do Porto realised the great dream of its founder, João Paulo Seara Cardoso (1956–2010): the opening of the Museu das Marionetas do Porto. 

In addition to its performances, it organises workshops, staged readings and exhibitions, thereby fostering a strong connection with the community and the public. 

 

Joana Magalhães is a transdisciplinary artist based in Porto. Her work lies at the intersection of theatre, installation and performance. Seeing, not seeing and how to see are the main focuses of her work. Her research centres on the co-evolutionary relationship between nature and culture.
