Author's bio text
João Sarnadas is a member of Flamingos, Well, and Montanha, and founded José Pinhal Post-Mortem Experience. He was part of Gentle Records and Favela Discos, where he has been developing much of his work in experimental and improvised music; he also became the label’s director of releases in 2017. As a member of Favela Discos, he founded Milteto, Vive Les Cônes, and Xula Velhos, and helped manage the label, the collective’s programming, and its residencies—notably the residency at Café Au Lait between 2015 and 2016. He has been developing a series of strategies for improvisation and approaches to electronic music, focusing on the use of loops, drones, the mixing console as an instrument, and the role of the dub master in collective improvisations. While still with Favela Discos, he has been developing works, notably Desilusão Óptica, presented at Serralves em Festa, and 2013: O Regresso, a science-fiction opera presented at Understage in 2019. He has also participated as a composer and sound designer in theater and dance productions such as Espírito do Lugar 4.0 & 5.0, Feedback, Cratera, and OU by Central Elétrica, and Sonâmbulo by Ramon Lima. In 2020 and 2021, he released two solo albums, The Hum and The Humm. Together with Inês Castanheira, he also created the sound identity for Batalha - Centro de Cinema.
