After A Herdade (2019, which broke a 14-year fast for Portuguese cinema in the Venice Film Festival Competition, which toured the world and received several awards at festivals, which was seen by around four million spectators in cinemas and on television channels, in Portugal and abroad), Tiago Guedes has a new film, Restos do Vento, which this year was part of the Official Selection of the Cannes Festival, where a Portuguese filmmaker has not uploaded his famous “ marches”.
A rite of passage in a village in the interior of Portugal leaves deep marks on a group of teenagers. Twenty-five years later, the past resurfaces like a time-delay bomb, and tragedy sets in.
Are violence and aggressiveness characteristic traits of human nature? (“Cruelty has a human heart, / […] / Terror has the divine human form / And Mystery human clothes,” wrote William Blake). Can we penetrate the abyss that man is for himself? In the ritual, the desire to be part of the group collides with humiliation, and we feel fear in the fixity of the eyes. There is a revolt that is silenced, but that at any moment can loom large, like the shadows, and explode. Tiago Guedes, who shares the script of Restos do Vento with Tiago Rodrigues, transforms the local into universal in this film where he is accompanied by an extraordinary cast that brings together several of the best Portuguese actors and actresses and young promises.
