Sinopse

Out of her fascinations and frustrations, Luisa Fernanda Alfonso embodies and turns around the archetypes of the Character Dancer and the Mariachi — characterized for being hyperdramatic, hypervirtuous and hypergendered. Masterpiece explores both their excesses in the tumult of nostalgic and Latin American associations, hijacking the dance from its legitimacy, legacy and traditions. In collaboration with composer Peter Rubel and an abundance of loudspeakers — repurposed as sound sculptures, affect carriers and acoustic partners — Masterpiece deals with the poetics of building, unbuilding, repeating, interrupting and abandoning dances and songs, which attempt to exist within consonance and dissonance. — Luisa Fernanda Alfonso

Author's bio text

Luisa Fernanda Alfonso is a dancer and choreographer from Bogotá, based in Berlin. Her work caresses notions of tradition and identity through absurdity and humour. Drawing often from her background in ballet and modern dance, Luisa welcomes imitation, mimicry and attempts as meaningful gestures. Her affinity for sound and loudspeakers is deeply interwoven with her choreographies. Other recent works include A humble concert by a decent woman, and Quinceañeras, in collaboration with Estefanía Álvarez Ramírez.

Peter Rubel is a musician and composer based in Berlin. He has created tape music works and instrumental compositions for various ensembles, including Studio Musikfabrik, Duo Vertige, and Ensemble S201. He is a member of various ensembles and bands, such as Müde, GLIS GLIS, International Music, and The Düsseldorf Düsterboys. His work focuses on recontextualisation, microtonality, polyrhythms, catchy melodies, and the expansion of instrumental performance through electronics.
