OS BONECOS DE SANTO ALEIXO

In this ethnographic work produced by Cooperativa Paz dos Reis (based in Porto), we travel to the origins of the traditional representation of Bonecos de Santo Aleixo, which travel from village to village in the region of Estremoz. They are presently cared for by Manel Jaleca and his family. From a long reading of Genesis, to social critique (Barber’s Step, Confessions of a Prude) and narration of their experiences as puppet artist that give voice to these articulated puppets and popular themes. All this combined gives us a portrait of a people, a region and the devilish puppets that dance for them.
