In the Tuscan countryside, an old villa is home to a group of women united by family and friendship. The matriarch is Elena (Liv Ullmann), a former aristocrat who manages the estate, accompanied by her daughter Francesca, her niece Marta, her friend Claudia (Catherine Deneuve), Piera, the housekeeper, and Anna, a young apprentice. Each woman faces her own difficulties, from financial problems to personal and romantic dilemmas, to the threat of losing her own home. The harmonious existence of these women is disrupted by the return of Leonardo (Philippe Noiret), Elena's ex-husband, triggering new and old conflicts.
