Ma and Guiying lead similarly difficult lives. He is a reticent farmer, the last of his family to remain single; she is disabled, infertile and long past what is considered marriageable age in rural China. Their arranged marriage, uniting two people used to isolation and humiliation, seems to force them into a relationship that has everything to make their lives worse. Instead, they seize the opportunity to rise above themselves and discover their common destiny. They learn to be close companions, to talk, to take care of each other and even to smile. All this despite the hard work required of them by their quintessential connection to the land and the trials that await them on their common path.
