EXPENSIVE SOUL + CRU

The band started in the late 90s when New Max and Demo (the vocalists), who were in the same class at school, got together to make their dream of making music come true. Demo challenged Max to take part in a competition on the Antena 3 radio station. The group was one of the winners of the station’s Project Life (Projecto Vida), initiative aimed at voting for the 12 best hip-hop songs about drugs. The prize was the chance to play live on radio, a performance that was their debut gig. After the concert, the singers decided they needed a supporting band. So a full band, with bass, drums, backing singers, guitars and keyboards, began to take shape in the form of the Jaguar Band, joining the vocalists of Expensive Soul to create what was the first hip-hop group in Portugal with a live band. Together they produced a debut album – “B.I.” – which was recorded at Max’s home studio and released in 2004 on their own independent label: New Max Records. This record is the inspiration for this get-together at the Rivoli Theatre for the final Porto Best Of in 2016.
